What to Expect: Hot Tub Delivery and Installation in Alberta

Most first-time hot tub buyers underestimate the complexity of installation and are surprised by how much preparation the site requires before delivery day. Here is exactly what to expect from start to finish.

Site Preparation: 2 to 4 Weeks Before Delivery

Before your spa arrives, you need a level, load-bearing surface prepared. The most common options in Alberta are a 100-millimetre reinforced concrete pad, compacted crushed gravel base (minimum 150 millimetres), or a structurally reinforced deck designed for the weight load.

A filled hot tub typically weighs between 2,000 and 3,500 kilograms including water and bathers. Most residential decks are not built to support this load without reinforcement. If you plan to deck-mount your spa, consult a structural engineer or your contractor to verify joist spacing, header sizing, and footing requirements.

Electrical preparation should be completed before delivery day. Most 240V hot tubs require a dedicated 50-amp or 60-amp GFCI-protected circuit with a disconnect panel within 1.5 to 2.5 metres of the spa. In Alberta, this work must be completed by a licensed electrician and inspected by a certified electrical inspector.

Delivery Day

Hot tubs are delivered on specialty equipment and typically require either a crane lift or a hand truck and rollers to move from the truck to the final position. Discuss access with your dealer in advance. Standard residential driveways accommodate most delivery configurations, but tight gates, fences, or elevation changes may require additional planning or equipment.

Clear a minimum 900-millimetre-wide path from the delivery vehicle to the installation site. Remove any obstacles including patio furniture, garden borders, and downspout extensions.

Electrical Connection

Your licensed electrician connects the spa to the pre-run circuit after placement. This typically takes 30 to 60 minutes if the electrical work is pre-staged. The spa will run an initial startup cycle lasting 24 to 48 hours during which it purges air from the plumbing and heats to setpoint for the first time.

First Water Fill and Chemistry

Your dealer should walk you through the initial water fill, filter startup, and chemistry setup as part of the installation. Test your water, add the startup chemical kit, and confirm all jets and lighting systems are functioning before the team leaves.

Your spa is ready for use once it reaches setpoint, typically 38 to 39 degrees Celsius, which takes approximately 4 to 12 hours depending on your incoming water temperature and ambient conditions.
